The Brief

Demolition of a historic Herefordshire public house made way for the construction of a three-storey building incorporating 36 social housing flats for Connexus Housing Association.

The new building was a blend of traditional construction mixed with modern, sustainable, energy-efficient technologies creating a structure that was suitable for its location at the gateway to Hereford. The building design required a variety of bold external façade finishes that created a building of striking illusion but was also subtle enough to blend in with existing buildings surrounding it.

The construction of the building included robust construction detailing to ensure acoustic requirements were exceeded. The building also included acoustic glazed external windows and doors to reduce the sound pollution from the adjacent busy highway. Finally, Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery Systems were installed in the flats facing the highway to provide continuous extraction of stale air and replacement with clean fresh air creating a fresh and clean environment for all residents.

The Result

C J Bayliss were contracted to complete the project on a design and build basis. Through intelligent and intuitive design combined with efficient construction, a building of high quality was produced, within the constraints of a restrictive client budget resulting in a very successful project.

The building was opened by the family of a local SAS hero and was named after him giving it that local community feeling and resemblance.
